Kanepi tops Pennetta for Palermo title (AP)
Fifth-seeded Kaia Kanepi has defeated defending champion Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Palermo Open. Pennetta made a strong start by breaking Kanepi in the first game Sunday, but the Estonian broke back in the sixth game to draw level at 3-3. Kanepi broke again to take a 5-3 lead. Pennetta broke back immediately, but Kanepi broke the Italian again to take the set.
Szavay fights back to win Prague Open (AP)
Seventh-seeded Agnes Szavay won her fifth career WTA title Sunday, beating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the Prague Open final. Szavay broke the 24-year-old Czech in the opening game and went on to dominate the first set. The 21-year-old Hungarian also won the first game of the second set, but Zahlavova Strycova responded by taking six straight games in her first WTA final.
Jets WRs Clowney, Holmes to visit Ghana (AP)
David Clowney has been all over the map this summer, working with charities from New Jersey to Haiti. Next stop: Ghana. And, he's bringing new teammate and longtime friend Santonio Holmes with him. The New York Jets wide receivers will leave for the West African country on Monday as part of a small group that will visit a children's hospital, schools and orphanages during the weeklong trip.
Bucs rookie McCoy aims for start of camp (AP)
It's not just because they're longtime buddies that Gerald McCoy is watching with interest as No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford negotiates his first contract with the St. Louis Rams. McCoy's desire to get to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' training camp on time in two weeks also hinges heavily on how long it takes his former college teammate to sign.
Kings C Richardson avoids arbitration (AP)
Center Brad Richardson has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Los Angeles Kings, avoiding an arbitration hearing. Richardson, a restricted free agent, will make $900,000 next season in the deal announced Saturday. Richardson had 11 goals and 16 assists last season while playing in a career-high 81 games for the Kings, and he scored a game-winning goal in Los Angeles' playoff series...
Chmura enters Packers Hall of Fame (AP)
Mark Chmura was pretty sure this day would never come. The former Green Bay tight end was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame on Saturday despite a career that was tarnished by a sexual assault allegation. A vital cog on the Packers' two Super Bowl teams in the 1990s and a three-time Pro Bowl selection, Chmura called this the "icing on the cake" of his football life.
