Steven Stamkos didn't lose his scoring touch during the offseason. Stamkos had two goals and an assist to help new Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher win his NHL debut in the Lightning's 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday night. "It's a good way to start a season," Stamkos said.

Newcomers Kris Versteeg and Clarke MacArthur each had a goal and an assist and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on Saturday night. Nikolai Kulemin, Phil Kessel and Tim Brent also scored and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 17 saves for Toronto, which opened the season Thursday night a 3-2 home victory over Montreal.


Blackhawks raise Stanley Cup banner (AP)

The Blackhawks are celebrating their long-awaited Stanley Cup title one more time before getting the home opener under way. The United Center crowd cheered again Saturday night when the banner in honor of the Chicago's first Stanley Cup victory since 1961 was raised to the rafters before Chicago faced the Detroit Red Wings.

Bruins sign D Chara to 7-year extension (AP)

Four-time All-Star Zdeno Chara has signed a seven-year contract extension that would keep him with the Boston Bruins through the 2018-19 season. General manager Peter Chiarelli announced the deal Saturday, before the Bruins played the Phoenix Coyotes in the Czech Republic. Chara is originally from neighboring Slovakia.

Arniel makes Jackets debut in Sweden (AP)

The new Columbus Blue Jackets coach takes charge of his first regular-season games Friday and Saturday in a double-header against the San Jose Sharks in Stockholm, part of the league's annual European tour. The Phoenix Coyotes' trip to the Czech capital to open the NHL regular season against the Boston Bruins is a homecoming for Petr Prucha and Radim Vrbata. The two Czech right wings played each other in Prague two years ago, when Prucha was with the New York Rangers and they swept a two-game series from Vrbata and his Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed 18-year-old forward Alex Burmistrov, the team's first-round NHL draft pick this year. Burmistrov, from Kazan, Russia, had 65 points, including 22 goals, with Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League last season. The Detroit Red Wings have put Kirk Maltby on waivers, meaning the forward's future with the franchise is uncertain after a run that included four Stanley Cups. Maltby, who has been with the team since the 1995-96 season, can be claimed by any other team. If nobody picks him up by noon Wednesday, he could be sent to Detroit's minor league team in Grand Rapids.

Preds, Canucks swap Ds Parent, O'Brien (AP)

The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Ryan Parent and forward Jonas Andersson from the Nashville Predators for defenseman Shane O'Brien and forward Dan Gendur on Tuesday. Parent had a goal and two assists in 48 games last season with Philadelphia Flyers. Andersson had seven goals and 13 assists in 30 games last year with Minsk Dynamo of the KHL.

Flames sign F Morrison to 1-year deal (AP)

Forward Brendan Morrison signed a one-year deal with the Calgary Flames on Monday. Flames assistant general manager Jay Feaster says the 35-year-old Morrison, who was released from a tryout contract with Vancouver on Sunday, could find himself on Calgary's second line in the short term. "A skilled guy," Feaster said.

NHL, officials' union reach 4-year deal (AP)

The NHL and the officials' union have reached a tentative deal on a new collective bargaining agreement just days before the opening of hockey's regular season. The deal struck Monday is a four-year agreement and is subject to ratification by members of the NHL Officials' Association and the league's board of governors.

Kings give G Bernier 2-year extension (AP)

The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with goalie Jonathan Bernier, who will back up starter Jonathan Quick. The deal announced Monday puts Bernier under contract through the 2012-13 season. He had one year left on his current contract. The 23-year-old goalie split time last season between the AHL's Manchester Monarchs and the Kings.
