Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors has won the Joe Dumars Trophy presented to the NBA player who best exemplifies sportsmanship. Curry received 88 of a possible 347 first-place votes from fellow players. Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls was second with 84 votes and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge was third with 56.


Hawks riding high into Game 2 vs. Magic (AP)

NBA fines Blazers coach McMillan $35,000 (AP)

Portland coach Nate McMillan has been fined $35,000 by the NBA for disparaging comments about the officiating in Game 1 of the Trail Blazers' playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks. McMillan was angry because Dallas took 29 free throws and his team took 13. Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki had 13 free throws in the fourth quarter alone, helping lead Dallas to an 89-81 victory.

Howard wins third straight Defensive POY (AP)

Dwight Howard has another piece of hardware for his personal trophy case. The Orlando Magic center became the first player to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award three straight seasons Monday -- and the voting wasn't close. Howard received 585 points, including 114 first-place votes, from a panel of 120 sports writers and broadcasters.


Mavs seek to avoid last year's collapse (AP)

As the highest-seeded Western Conference team to win its playoff opener, the Dallas Mavericks should be feeling pretty good about themselves. They don't. Sure, the Mavs are happy to be up 1-0 on the Portland Trail Blazers going into Game 2 on Tuesday night, and happier still to have won with their defense.

Memphis to give Randolph 4-yr. extension (AP)

Zach Randolph says he's signing a new four-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies after leading the franchise to its first playoff win. Randolph said Monday he planned to sign the extension in the coming days. The 29-year-old says the Grizzlies have championship potential with a core that includes Mike Conley and Marc Gasol.

Rockets F Scola undergoes knee surgery (AP)

Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola has had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to recover in time for training camp. The 6-foot-9 Scola was Houston's leading rebounder at 8.2 per game and second-leading scorer at 18.3 points per game this past season. The Rockets finished 43-39 and missed the playoffs.

Knicks G Billups expected to miss Game 2 (AP)

Chauncey Billups is expected to miss the second game of the New York Knicks' playoff series against the Boston Celtics because of a left leg injury. Coach Mike D'Antoni said Monday the starting point guard was "very questionable" for Tuesday night's game in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series.

Paul's 33 and 14 lift Hornets by Lakers (AP)

Chris Paul and a few teammates sneaked across the street from their hotel to Staples Center the night before the New Orleans Hornets began the postseason, eagerly hoisting up a few shots in the shadows of the Lakers' imposing championship banners. With their tumultuous regular season finally a memory, Paul said the Hornets were almost unbearably eager for the playoffs to start.


Bulls know defense needs to improve (AP)

There wasn't a stingier team on defense than the Chicago Bulls, so it's safe to say they weren't thrilled after their playoff opener against the Indiana Pacers. Sure, they got 39 points from Derrick Rose and prevailed 104-99 Saturday after wiping out a 10-point deficit with a 16-1 run to close the game, but for much of the afternoon, the Pacers were getting open looks.

Paul would consider playing for Bobcats (AP)

Chris Paul remembers every detail of the first time he met Michael Jordan. Now referring to him as his mentor, could Paul decide to return home next year and make Jordan his boss? Paul won't rule it out. "It would definitely be something to think about," the New Orleans guard said Tuesday when asked about the potential to sign with the Jordan-owned Charlotte Bobcats in 2012.

Moments later, the two had each other wrapped up, each with a hand on the other's face while players, officials and coaches tried to break up the skirmish. It's been a forgettable season for the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers, but it's almost over.

The Miami Heat seemed to be coming unglued. Playing against a bunch of backups, Zydrunas Ilgauskas was ejected for slamming the ball off a friend's back and the Big Three were on the verge of blowing a 20-point lead in a game they needed to lock up a better playoff spot. Nets G Williams undergoes wrist surgery (AP)

New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams underwent successful wrist surgery today at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. The surgery was performed by hand specialist Dr. Andrew Weiland and Nets team orthopedic Dr. Riley Williams III. It involved the removal of loose bodies and scar tissue from Williams' right wrist.
