Dwyane Wade stayed long after practice ended Wednesday, fine-tuning his shot for so long that he had to eventually be summoned off the court so the Miami Heat's plane could leave on time. Up 3-1 in the Eastern Conference finals, the Heat are still working. "We're desperate," Wade said.

Mavs rally late again, return to finals (AP)

Dirk Nowitzki hit a three point basket in the fourth quarter to put the Mavs up 96-94.

Dirk Nowitzki wrapped his hands around the silver ball trophy that goes to the Western Conference champions and smiled. After five years, he and the Dallas Mavericks are kings of their conference again, earning another trip to the NBA finals. Yet Nowitzki didn't flash the wide, toothy grin of someone relieved to have accomplished his goal.

The young Oklahoma City Thunder keep getting better. They just are not ready to take that next step yet. Despite leading on the road for much of Game 5 of the Western Conference finals, they couldn't extend their season after giving Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki a second chance. Nowitzki hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:14 left, after Russell Westbrook couldn't handle the rebound on...

Chicago Bulls backup center Omer Asik will miss the rest of the season because of a broken left fibula. Asik was injured in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals at Miami. An MRI and CT scan taken before Game 4 on Tuesday confirmed the injury. He tried to play anyway, lasting just two minutes, and general manager Gar Forman said Asik wasn't risking more damage.

Grizzlies see playoff runs in future (AP)

The Memphis Grizzlies see their amazing playoff run as a painful building block. They have good cause for optimism too. Memphis went further than any other No. 8 seed in the Western Conference ever had -- and the Grizzlies did it without Rudy Gay, their second-leading scorer. Zach Randolph says expectations will be higher now the Grizzlies laid a foundation with seven playoff wins.

Prokhorov to head pro-Kremlin party (AP)

Russian tycoon and New Jersey Nets basketball team owner Mikhail Prokhorov says his decision to head a pro-Kremlin political party was an "uneasy" one. Prokhorov said Monday he would head the Just Cause party -- what he later called in televised remarks "an uneasy and somewhat surprising decision." Just Cause hopes to win legislature seats in December parliamentary elections.

Kevin Durant followed his worst playoff performance with one of his best, taking the Oklahoma City Thunder from the brink of elimination to the Western Conference finals. Durant scored 39 points for his best offensive outing of the series, Russell Westbrook became the fifth NBA player to record a triple-double in a Game 7 and the Thunder closed out the Memphis Grizzlies with a 105-90 win on...

The Chicago Bulls saw the stars aligning for the Heat last summer, the "Big Three" free agents uniting in Miami on a quest for a championship. Joakim Noah wasn't conceding anything. Nor was Derrick Rose. Chicago swept Miami in the regular season, and if the Bulls keep this up, they'll knock the Heat out of the playoffs, too.

James, Wade both struggle in Game 1 loss (AP)

LeBron James had trouble sleeping the night before the opener of the Eastern Conference finals because he was so excited about the opportunity ahead. Maybe he was a little tired Sunday night. Now the Miami Heat star will likely have more restless nights ahead before Game 2 on Wednesday night. James picked up two first-quarter fouls, had an off-night offensively shooting just 5-for-15, and the...

Former Michigan basketball star Jalen Rose says Grant Hill has agreed to help support the new charter school in Detroit bearing Rose's name. The Jalen Rose Leadership Academy is expected to open in September. Rose says Hill has promised to lend his support and that things are fine between them after Hill criticized Rose in March for comments he made in an ESPN documentary about Michigan's...

Chris Paul is trying to decompress by spending time with family, visiting children his foundation works with and generally avoiding thoughts of his future with the New Orleans Hornets. "Right now, I'm just paying attention to what I'm doing here for these kids," Paul said Friday while stopping by a charter elementary school where his CP3 foundation and Chase bank sponsor an...

Kidd feels urgency of Mavs' playoff run (AP)

DALLAS, TX - MAY 08: Guard Jason Kidd #2 of the Dallas Mavericks dribbles the ball past Kobe Bryant #24 of the Los Angeles Lakers in Game Four of the Western Conference Semifinals during the 2011 NBA Playoffs on May 8, 2011 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Jason Kidd walked off the court slowly, his blue long-sleeved T-shirt, white jersey and gray warmup pants soaked in sweat. As if an intense scrimmage wasn't enough, he'd also just pushed himself through a series of 3-pointers and free throws -- two series, actually, going through his around-the-arc, to-the-stripe routine on each end of the court.

Rose's career-high 44 get Bulls 2-1 lead (AP)

When Derrick Rose spotted the slightest of openings, he flew into the lane, a blur who made everyone else appear to be standing still. When the defender took a step back, hoping to cut off Rose's path to the hoop, he would launch a jumper that usually hit nothing but net. It was that kind of night for the MVP.

Mavs rally to take 3-0 lead on Lakers (AP)

Kobe Bryant knows the deal. His Los Angeles Lakers are down 0-3 to the Dallas Mavericks and none of the 98 NBA teams facing that deficit have ever come back to win a series. Yet Bryant also knows his team has won the last two championships, and reached the finals three straight years. And that his soon-to-be-retired coach has won a record 11 championships and has never been swept in his 20 years on...

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - MAY 03: Guard Russell Westbrook #0 of the Oklahoma City Thunder takes a shot against Marc Gasol #33 of the Memphis Grizzlies in Game Two of the Western Conference Semifinals in the 2011 NBA Playoffs on May 3, 2011 at Oklahoma City Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Zach Randolph has never played this deep into the postseason, and he's quickly learned a crucial lesson on the importance of rest. He scored a franchise playoff-best 31 points in ousting the San Antonio Spurs a week ago, and went for 34 as the Grizzlies opened their Western Conference semifinal series with a win in Oklahoma City.
