Agent for Roddick, Evert dies at 48 (AP)

Tennis agent Ken Meyerson, who represented Grand Slam winners Andy Roddick, Chris Evert and Justine Henin, has died. He was 48. Meyerson died Wednesday night at his home in Florida, according to a statement by his agency, Lagardere Unlimited. The cause of death was not immediately known. Meyerson had been president of Lagardere's tennis division since 2009.

US Open may make Monday finish permanent (AP)

After four consecutive years of rain-postponed men's finals, the U.S. Open is looking into changing its schedule as soon as next year and could become the first Grand Slam tennis tournament to switch permanently to a Monday finish. Tournament director Jim Curley told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday that the U.S.

Muster to retire from tennis again at 44 (AP)

Former world No. 1 Thomas Muster will retire from full-time tennis following next month's Erste Bank Open tournament in his native Austria. Muster, who turns 44 early next month, made his comeback to professional tennis in 2010 after 11 years away. "You should not drag it along forever," Muster said Wednesday.

Virus forces Venus out of Rogers Cup (AP)

Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup due to an illness. Williams says she wasn't feeling well so she went to see the doctor Sunday. She was diagnosed with a viral illness and says she is "extremely disappointed" she won't be able to play in Toronto. Qualifier Zhang Shuai steps into Williams' first-round match Tuesday against Ana Ivanovic.

Radwanska claims first title since 2008 (AP)

Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland won her first tournament title in more than three years with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over third-ranked Vera Zvonareva in the Mercury Insurance Open final on Sunday. The third-seeded Radwanska used a steady all-around game and took advantage of Zvonareva's inconsistent play to win her first title since she took the Eastbourne grass event in June 2008.

Stepanek beats Monfils to win Legg Mason (AP)

Through injuries and illness and, well, aging, Radek Stepanek never doubted he'd one day hoist another trophy overhead as an ATP tournament champion. He was right. The unseeded Czech's net-charging style carried him to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Gael Monfils of France in the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Sunday.

Haase wins first ATP title at Kitzbuehel (AP)

Robin Haase of the Netherlands defeated Albert Montanes of Spain 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 Saturday to win his first career ATP title at the Bet-at-Home Cup. The 53rd-ranked Haase, playing in his first final, is the first Dutch winner of an ATP event since Martin Verkerk won in Amersfoort, Netherlands, in 2004. Haase is the eighth player this season to become a first-time champion on the ATP tour.

Nadal says he'll face France in Davis (AP)

Rafael Nadal says he is available to play for Spain in the Davis Cup semifinals against France. The French Open champion says if captain Albert Costa calls on him for the Sept. 16-18 series "I'll be there." Nadal missed Spain's quarterfinal win over the United States while recovering from the busy clay-court season and the Wimbledon final loss to top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

Hip injury forces Kirilenko to withdraw (AP)

Maria Kirilenko has withdrawn from the Mercury Insurance Open because of a left hip injury. The 11th-seeded Russian, ranked No. 26 in the world, looked sharp in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rebecca Marino on Tuesday in the first round. Kirilenko sought treatment after the first set and in her post-match press conference, she said it was for a "pain" in her left leg.

Spain to play Davis Cup tie in Cordoba (AP)

Spain has chosen Cordoba as the venue to host France in the semifinals of the Davis Cup. The Spanish tennis federation says via Twitter that the Sept. 16-18 series will be held on clay courts in the Andalucian city's Plaza de Toros bullfighting arena. In the previous round, Spain beat the United States, while France eliminated Germany.

US Open singles champs to each get $1.8M (AP)

The U.S. Tennis Association says the singles champions at this year's U.S. Open will each receive a record $1.8 million. Total prize money is rising by more than $1 million to $23.7 million, the most ever for the Grand Slam tournament. The USTA said Wednesday the 2011 tournament would have an increase of about 6 percent in men's and women's singles prize money.

Pervak, Suarez Navarro win in Gastein (AP)

Russia's Ksenia Pervak and Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro reached the quarterfinals of the Gastein Ladies on Wednesday. The eighth-seeded Pervak saved six match points before defeating 16-year-old Nastja Kolar, a 309th-ranked qualifier from Slovenia, 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2. Australia hosts Switzerland in Davis Cup (AP)

Australia will host Switzerland in the Davis Cup playoffs, with the winning team returning to the World Group. Neither team played in the World Group this year after losing in playoffs at the end of the 2010 season. Australia will choose the venue for the best-of-five series from Sept. 16-18. Vinci wins in 1st round at Palermo Open (AP)

Fresh off her third title of the year, second-seeded Roberta Vinci beat Kazakh qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2, 7-5 Tuesday in the first round of the Palermo Open. Vinci's victory in Budapest on Sunday made her the first Italian woman to win three titles in one year. Her ranking is up to a career-best No.

Starace advances to 2nd round in Sweden (AP)

Potito Starace of Italy advanced to the second round of the Swedish Open by beating Julian Reister of Germany 7-6 (6), 6-3 Tuesday. Starace will face Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy of France, who defeated Swedish wild card Andreas Vinciguerra 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Spaniards Pere Riba and Guillermo Olaso also advanced, along with Michael Ryderstedt, who lost both singles matches in Sweden's Davis Cup...

Ferrer lifts Spain past US in Davis Cup (AP)

Everything was set up for Andy Roddick and the Americans to win. A Davis Cup quarterfinal against Spain set deep in the heart of Texas, a hard surface that was supposed to complement their big hitters and a rowdy crowd of 16,000 ready to cheer them on. Spain was even missing superstar Rafael Nadal, who skipped the matches to rest after losing the Wimbledon final.

Mardy Fish is making something of a habit of being the last U.S. man in the field at Grand Slam tournaments. Not that he's all that thrilled about the distinction. He did it at the French Open last month, and now he's done it again at Wimbledon, where Fish is into the fourth round for the first time in his career.


Tomic, 18, youngest into 4th since 1990 (AP)

There was a moment when Bernard Tomic didn't think he'd get past the first round of qualifying for Wimbledon, much less into the second week of the tournament. Now he's the youngest player in 21 years to reach the fourth round of the grass-court Grand Slam after the biggest victory of his career at the All England Club.


Djokovic defeats Baghdatis in 4 sets (AP)

Second-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon on Saturday with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus. The two-time semifinalist from Serbia won 43 straight matches heading into the French Open but lost to Roger Federer in the semifinals. Since that loss, Djokovic has won three straight at the All England Club.


Backed by fiance, Sharapova rolls again (AP)
