Clijsters to play at French Open (AP)

Kim Clijsters says she's healthy enough to compete at the French Open. The Belgian said Monday that she will play with her right ankle taped but added that her shoulder and wrist injuries no longer impede her before the Grand Slam tournament she has yet to win. Clijsters is a two-time runner-up at the French, and slow clay is generally considered her weakest surface.


Petrova downs Marino in Strasbourg (AP)

Fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia has defeated Rebecca Marino of Canada 7-6 (4), 6-3 to reach the second round of the Strasbourg International. Petrova, twice a semifinalist at the French Open, has struggled on clay so far this season and lost first round-matches both in Madrid and Rome. Seventh-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues and Laura Pous-Tio of Spain also advanced Monday.

Rome hospital: Rosewall feeling better (AP)

A Rome hospital says tennis great Ken Rosewall is feeling well and talking to staff after falling ill at the Italian Open. Officials in the San Camillo Hospital health director's office are declining to say exactly why the 76-year-old Australian was hospitalized. They said Monday that the eight-time Grand Slam champion had asked that no details about his condition be given to media.

Novak Djokovic is just starting to get used to hearing his name mentioned in the same breath as the legends of the game. The seemingly unstoppable Serb stretched his unbeaten start to the season to 37 matches on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the Italian Open final. Djokovic's streak trails only John McEnroe's 42-0 start in 1984.


Sharapova beats Stosur in Italian final (AP)

Maria Sharapova beat Sam Stosur 6-2, 6-4 in the Italian Open final Sunday for the biggest clay-court title of her career. After a three-hour rain delay, the seventh-seeded Sharapova won the opening four games, then cruised from there to follow up her victory over top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals.

Rafael Nadal set up a Madrid Open showdown with Roger Federer for the third straight year, beating Michael Llodra 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals Friday. Federer beat Robin Soderling 7-6 (2), 6-4. Novak Djokovic stretched his perfect 2011 start to 30 matches, beating David Ferrer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to move within 12 of John McEnroe's record 42-0 start in 1984.

Juan Martin del Potro withdrew from the Madrid Open on Thursday with an injury that could force him to miss the French Open. The former U.S. Open champion said a pain in his left hip forced him to pull out of Thursday's third-round match with top-ranked Rafael Nadal. "The pain is getting worse day-by-day so I didn't want to risk it," Del Potro said.

Austrian tennis player Stefan Koubek, who was ranked a career-high No. 20 in 2000, has announced his retirement. Currently ranked No. 261, Koubek will end his career with an exhibition match July 30. Venus in Wimbledon warmup for a change (AP)

Venus Williams has broken with tradition and entered a warmup tournament before Wimbledon. The 30-year-old American has agreed to play at the Eastbourne International from June 11-18 for the first time since 1998. Williams and her sister Serena usually head home to Florida after the French Open to complete their preparations for Wimbledon, which Venus has won five times.

Kim Clijsters has resumed on-court training but the U.S. and Australian Open champion is still unlikely to play in the French Open later this month. Clijsters, who had been sidelined with shoulder, wrist and ankle injuries since early last month, said Wednesday's first training session was completed without pain.

US Fed Cup team relegated after loss (AP)

Unable to draw on the strength of the Williams sisters, the United States failed to win a single match against Germany and was knocked from the top tier of the Fed Cup for the first time. The Americans were blanked 5-0 in the playoff and will no longer be among the top eight nations in the World Group, a big letdown for a country that has won the Fed Cup a record 17 times.

Czech Republic tops Belgium, makes final (AP)

The Czech Republic advanced to the Fed Cup final Sunday, beating Belgium in the deciding doubles for a 3-2 victory in their best-of-five tie. Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova topped Yanina Wickmayer and Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-4 to put the Czechs in their first final since they won the title as Czechoslovakia in 1988.

Russia secures berth in Fed Cup final (AP)

Russia secured a berth in the Fed Cup final Sunday, taking an insurmountable 3-0 lead over two-time defending champion Italy in the best-of-five World Group semifinals after Vera Zvonareva beat Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-2. The third-ranked Zvonareva broke Vinci in the first game before the Italian started attacking the net and leveled the set at 3-3.
