Google Wallet Makes Sprint Debut (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor - Despite a patent claim on the technology behind it, Google Wallet has rolled out to all Nexus S 4G customers on Sprint's network. The app lets customers turn their smartphones into wallets and make a purchase with a tap of the phone. Sprint is the first carrier to offer the app.

Nearly a third of Americans prefer texting over talking (Digital Trends)

Digital Trends - According to a recently released study by Pew Internet, thirty-one percent of Americans would rather communicate through texting on a mobile phone rather than speaking with someone over the same phone. Young adults are the most common group that prefers this method of communication and the average of the survey group was about 110 texts per day while the median of that group clocked in at about 50 texts per day. One in ten young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 report that they send or receive at least 200 text messages per day (approximately 6,0o0 messages per month). The next age group, 25-34 year olds, typically average about 42 texts per day and this trend continues to decrease down to about 5 texts a day for the 65 and older group. 

News Corp. offers $4.7 million to phone hacking victims (Digital Trends)

Digital Trends - Rupert Murdoch recently approved an early attempt at a settlement offer to the family of Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old girl that was murdered in 2002. This payment stems from alleged hacking of Milly Dowler’s mobile phone by representatives of the Murdoch-owned News of the World. When the public discovered the phone hacking scandal, several of the high-ranking employees at the newspaper were arrested and eventually lost their jobs after the scandal forced the News of the World to shut down after 168 years of business. In addition to the newspaper closure, parent company News Corp. was forced to withdraw from negotiations to purchase the remaining shares of the BskyB network.

Google Wallet: First Impressions (Mashable)

Mashable - Google officially rolled out its Google Wallet mobile payment system on Monday. We've been using a Sprint Nexus S 4G with Google Wallet for the last six weeks. Google Wallet is still in its infancy, but the system already shows a lot of promise. Right now, Google Wallet only works with Citi-Mastercards and the Google Prepaid Card. Visa and Google announced a worldwide agreement to support the Visa payWave app, but it will still be up to the financial institutions and banks to add support.

Verizon launches first budget LTE phone, the Pantech Breakout on September 22 (Digital Trends)

Digital Trends - Fresh on the heels of the Droid Bionic Verizon announces yet another 4G LTE Android phone.  The Pantech Breakout will be the first budget friendly LTE phone on Verizon’s network.  On contact the Breakout can be had for only $100, which is half the price of the next cheapest phone in the stable.  The Breakout will become available later this week on September 22.

AT&T Launches LTE In Five U.S. Markets (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor - AT&T has launched commercial operations of the carrier's 4G LTE networks in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The new high-speed wireless coverage zones promise to deliver mobile broadband speeds up to 10 times faster than AT&T's existing 3G network.

The near-field communication and contact-less payment system was expected to launch this summer. Google Wallet -- along with Google Offers -- is built on an open platform that combines multiple credit cards, loyalty programs and offers at the point of sale. Payment is made by swiping your smartphone at checkout. Essentially, Google is turning your phone into your wallet.
